Arsenal and Manchester City are both interested in signing Real Betis left wing back Junior Firpo, according to Calciomercato.
The Spanish youth international has been impressing in the La Liga this season and was instrumental over the weekend, scoring the opener as Betis secured a shock 4-3 win over Barcelona.
His performances have not gone unnoticed, with the Premier League duo of Arsenal and Manchester City tracking his progress.
Arsenal are looking to strengthen their left back position with both Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac battling with fitness issues this season.
Monreal has been one of the most consistent left backs in the league. However, at 32 he isn’t getting any younger, and has been linked with a return to Spain over the years as his career winds down.
Sead Kolasinac only recently returned from injury, and even when fit has not been convincing defensively when playing as a left back. It is thought that the Gunners are not convinced about making him a first choice left back if Monreal eventually leaves the club.
Unai Emery who has had to use five different players including midfielder Granit Xhaka at left back this season will need to address the issue as soon as possible.
Firpo is primarily a left back, but can play as a left wing back and a central defender. His attacking prowess would be very useful in Emery’s system where the full backs push forward and provide width for the attack.
He is under contract with Betis until 2023 and with a €50 million release clause on his head, he won’t come cheap.Follow Football News Arena on Facebook and Twitter for the latest transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from across the major Leagues in Europe and around the World.
