Arsene Wenger has urged Arsenal fans to be patient with Lucas Perez.
The former Deportivo La Coruna striker made his debut for Arsenal against Southampton on Saturday and had a quiet game.
Although he played a part in Laurent Koscielny’s goal, his general performance was average and some fans including Ian Wright was a bit critical of his performance on saturday.
‘Arsenal need a striker. I thought we would see someone more direct.
Hopefully that will happen,’ Wright said of Perez’s performance against Southampton.
‘It seemed to me that he’s a winger,’ the former Arsenal striker added.
However, Wenger has urged for patience with the 28 year old.
“Let’s give [him] time,” Wenger told the club’s website, as quoted by fourfourtwo.com.
“We have scored goals since the start of the season, but we bought one more striker because we thought we needed one more. Let’s give him time and not judge him too quickly.”
“I think he got 17 goals last year. In the second half, I think he combined much better. It is not easy as well to start at home, the pressure is there for everybody and everybody has their eyes on them,” he said.
“You could see that especially with [Shkodran] Mustafi, because in the second half he was much more comfortable than in the first.”
It is understandable that Arsenal fans want the striker to hit the ground running but Perez has come to a league with a different style of play, culture and weather from the ones he has experienced and will definitely need time to adjust to the new life.
