Arsenal Legend Ray Parlour says he hopes Mustafi will bring leadership qualities to the squad this season.
The German defender joined Arsenal in the final days of the transfer window and many are hoping he has the quality to be a long term successor to Per Mertesacker. However Parlour is hoping the defender will not only add quality to the squad but also add leadership qualities.
“I’m hoping he’s got captain material, that he can be the leader,” he told talkSPORT, as quoted by HITC Sport.
“They desperately need someone because Koscielny is a fantastic defender but he’s not really that defender that you need.”
Expectations are high on the defender and many are hoping he makes an immediate impact at the Emirates. Indeed it is not always easy to move to the Premier League but the defender is not a stranger to the Premier League having spent three years of his career at Everton.
Mustafi appears to be very confident in his ability and believes a move to Arsenal is the best thing for his career at the moment.
“When you change a team, you obviously try to take a step forward.
“I think coming here I made a step forward because for me Arsenal is a big club, with big plays, a great manager.
“For me the most important thing was if I make a change, can I learn something? Is it going to be good for my development? I think being here, now it’s going to help me to grow as a player.”
