Liverpool are interested in bringing Schalke defender Joel Matip to Anfield, according to reports.
According to goal.com, the Reds are interested in signing the centre half, who has just six months left on his current deal, on a pre contract in January and this would likely see Matip join Liverpool next summer on a free transfer, with Schalke manager Andre Breitenreiter ruling out a winter transfer as he plots for a strong finish to the 2015/16 campaign.
The 42-year-old insists that he expects Matip to be at the club beyond the winter transfer window, but if the player continues to stall negotiations, Matip is expected to move to Merseyside when his current deal expires.
Matip, 24, who is well known by Red’s coach Jurgen Klopp from his time at Dortmund is seen as a necessary addition to beef up the squad with veteran defender Kolo Toure set to depart at the end of the season, as per the report
Schalke have however recently offered the German born Cameroonian international a new four-year deal with an annual salary of €3.5 million, it is believed that Klopp could personally intervene to sway the player to Anfield just like Marko Grujic who the German tactician convinced to pick Liverpool over long time admirers Inter Milan.
