Liverpool looks to pounce for Schalke’s contract rebel Joel Matip, according to reports. The 24 year old has refused extending his contract with the German Bundesliga side after negotiations with the management has stalled.
According to Goal.com, Liverpool are understood to be interested in securing a pre-contract agreement with Schalke defender Joel Matip in January, and the Reds have been encouraged by the defender’s hesitation to renew his current deal.
Liverpool needs another defender to boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions league next season with Dejan Lovren still not looking confident and convincing enough at the back while Kolo Toure seem to be nearing the end of his footballing career; the Ivorian international is currently working on his coaching badges and he would be focusing more on that at the end of his contract next summer.
Klopp want to exploit his knowledge of German football to lure the Cameroonian international to Anfield after the player, who would be a free agent in the summer refused the offer for a four year deal with a salary of £3.5 Million-a-year.
Schalke would block any move for the player in January in a bid to persuade him to sign a contract extension but risks losing him for free in the summer. Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt stated that ‘’There are no request for him, Joel’s intention is not to leave the club in January, and if it was like, we would prevent that with everything we have.’’
