Wolfsburg 3 vs 2 Man United: Player Ratings, Man Of The Match & SHOCK Flop Of The Match

DE GEA (5.5): Had no answer to Wolfsburg strikes but made some remarkable saves to give United a slim hope to sneaking through to the next round, but it wasn’t meant to be

SMALLING (5.5): The defender caused problems for Wolfsburg defence and was almost rewarded with another goal against the Germans like he did against them at Old Trafford. Didn’t play as well as we know he could.

BLIND (5.5): Read the game well and was also good in possession.

VARELA (5.0): still too inexperience for a match of this magnitude, struggled to assist the attack going forward.

DARMIAN (5.0): The Italian found it hard to cope with Draxler’s movement and had a torrid time but assisted in United’s attacking play before being forced off injured.

SCHWEINSTEIGER (4.0): Failed to show his leadership qualities in the absence of Rooney and Carrick. Almost as if the German decided not to show up against his fellow countryside club, offered little in possession like we know he could and did nothing to stop Draxler passing him in the build up to Wolfsburg’s second goal.

FELLAINI (5.5): Never expected him to start in the midfield section ahead of Carrick but was a threat in the air and was denied a goal by the brilliance of Wolfsburg goalie Benaglio. His creative ability as a midfielder was suspect.

MATA (5.5): Provided Martial with the first goal and was also responsible in denying United an equalizer by interfering with Lingard’s strike. Created nothing more than Martial’s goal but was good in possession. More is expected from the midfielder.

LINGARD (5.o): Failed to trouble the Wolfsburg defence as a winger and got his goal ruled out for offside because Mata interfered with play from an offside position.

DEPAY (5.o):  Needs to be more decisive with his play and practices more on his end product, expected him to influence the game more but didn’t.

MARTIAL (6.0): If United had two players in the mode of Martial upfront; then Wolfsburg wouldn’t have been able to cope.  His movement caused Wolfsburg defenders problems. Took his goal very well but failed to do more as Dante and Naldo kept 100% focus on him.

CARRICK (5.0): Came in as a substitute and held possession well but could not make the difference United needed.

BORTHWICK-JACKSON (5.0): Injury to Darmien offered him his chance to make his second appearance for United. Good defensively but still inexperienced for a big occasion such as this.

POWELL (4.0): Should have done better to prevent United going down to a late Naldo header, mistimed the cross that led to the winning goal.
