Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United are going head to head in a bid to secure the services of Italian defender Daniele Rugani from Serie A heavyweight Juventus.
Rugani who joined the Italian champions from Empoli in the summer is believed to be seeking a new challenge due to the lack of opportunity coming his way having not made his competitive debut yet. Although that could be attributed to the fact that poor results haven’t given Juventus manager Allegri chances to blood in the youngster.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger sees Rugani as the ideal successor to ex German international Per Mertesacker who is thirty-one already. Callum Chambers has regularly failed to convince when given opportunities added to the inconsistencies shown by Gabriel since joining in January has led Wenger to dig into the transfer market to secure Rugani’s signature ahead of rivals Manchester United.
Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal also has his sight set on Rugani following up initial interest in the defender from his time at Empoli.
The United boss has tried to get the perfect defence partner for the resurgent Chris Smalling. Daley Blind has failed to convince at centre back while injuries have prevented Phil Jones from an extended run in the side making Van Gaal to opt for the versatile Delay Blind as a temporary option at center back.
Getting him to England will be no small task for either club with Juventus still feeling the effects of letting Kingsley Coman leave prematurely for Bayern. However a promise of playing time could be key in making him force a move either to Emirates or Old Trafford.
