Manchester United Manager Louis Van Gaal is keen to sign a defender and is eyeing up a move for highly rated Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.
The 23 years old German international is highly regarded in the game and has been earning rave reviews for his performances in Spain.
Mustafi formed a formidable partnership with current Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi last season by putting in a series of splendid performances for Valencia.
His performances prompted the fans of Valencia to overlook the sale of Otamendi as they believe that Mustafi is the better player.
The Red Devils are set to battle with Bayern Munich over the defender who has a release clause of £35M in his contract. But Valencia will be willing to cash in on their priced asset if a bid of around £22M is put on the table, according to reports.
Touted as the future of German defence; Mustafi is now being linked with a move away from Valencia. The Daily Express reports that both Bayern Munich and Manchester United are weighing up a move for the coveted centre back.
Van Gaal is in desperate need of a partner for Chris Smalling; the England defender has been outstanding this season, but has had little support from his make shift centre back pairing.
The German based club seems to be favourite judging from the fact that Mustafi is a German international; but United has got the spending power to get any player they need and at any reasonable cost, as they have shown with the capture of 19 years old Anthony Martial; whose initial cost is said to be £36.3M and would rise further to £58.8M with add-ons.
