Apart from goalkeeper David De Gea and Chris Smalling, the rest of the United squad will have one or two things to prove. But here are four particular players that has more to prove on Saturday against West Brom:
The skipper has not been strange to criticism and he responded well by scoring the lone goal against CSKA Moscow. He need to prove to the fans and critics alike that he still has what it takes to lead the England and United attack by scoring against Westbrom. A goal on Saturday would boost his confidence and kick start his season.
He is a natural bred winger, direct in his attacking approach and very skillful. With United short in wingers with speed and creativity; Lingard is an added option. Juan Mata will have to look for another position to fit into but certainly not at the right wing because Lingard is a better option. The youngster needs to show Van Gaal that he is the ideal player for that position by putting up a better performance.
Since his equaliser against CSKA Moscow Anthony Martial has not scored, he needs to prove to the boss, fans and himself that his early form isn’t a flash in the pan and his price tag isn’t weighing up on him. The British press are keeping tabs and son the pressure would come the longer he stays without a goal.
The Italian lost his place in the team with series of poor performance after starting pretty well in the league. With Injury to Valencia, it’s an opportunity to prove to Van Gaal that he has what it takes to cope with the English style of play.
