- SCORE ON TIME
If United are to defeat Middlesbrough they would have to score an early goal so as to unsettle the Championship side because the longer the scoreline stays at 0-0, the more confident Middlesbrough would get and would fancy their chances. But an early goal would disrupt any game plan that Boro may have come with.
- START WITH A STRONG SQUAD
Just like in the 3rd round tie against Ipswich Town, United should field a strong squad capable of ending this contest as a tie by the hour mark then introduce the fringe players to have a run-in in the final half an hour of the game.
The manager should see the Capital one cup as one of his more realistic chance for a silverware this season and so do away with any form of experimenting.
- HOLD POSSESSION AND DICTATE THE TEMPO OF PLAY
Manchester United must retain possession and dictate the tempo of game. United should also be very aggressive in winning back possession when they lose it thereby limiting Middlesbrough’s chances of trying to implement any of their game plan.
- UNITED MUST NOT CONCEDE FIRST
Last season in the capital one cup, United played against MK Dons and conceded first and didn’t recover from that shock, they ended up losing 4-0. Immediately after the goal, Mk Dons grew in confidence; they took the game to a shocked-looking United team and ended up scoring three more goals.
United must learn from that game and not allow a similar occurrence
