Manchester United are plotting a January transfer coup to sign out of favour Real Madrid Portuguese defender Lima Pepe. According to Metro sports paper, Pepe would could leave in the region of £29 million but United are willing to pay closer to £14.7million for the 32 years old.
Pepe signed a one year contract extention two month ago, keeping him with the Bernabue side till end of 2016/17 season but the player has started just 3 of Real Madrid’s games this season and its looking likely that with the right offer, Pepe will be leaving the Santiago Bernabue.
Louis Van Gaal would need the experience that Pepe would bring to the team. Pepe is a leader and is built for the premiership. He would form a fantastic defence partnership with Chris Smalling and turn United into a serious title contender.
But with United loosing out on the chance to sign a younger and equally rugged defender in Nicholas Otamendi and Sergio Ramos signing a new contract with Real Madrid when United came calling, it will be hard to see Real Madrid letting Pepe go for a cheap or alternatively, they may use Pepe as a player + cash deal to lure David Degea to the Spanish Capital.
Pepe will fit in well into the physical nature of the premiership and can also play in the defensive midfield role as he did when Jose Mourinho was the coach at Real Madrid.
Its hard to see Pepe leaving in the January transfer window but during the summer is more realistic as he would seek for regular playing time.
United should look for other alternative defender because Real Madrid would only sell Pepe to Manchester Unite if David degea is used as a bait, so who is more important? Retaining David Degea or getting Pepe at the expense of De Gea?
