Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford could be recalled back to Stamford Bridge earlier than expected.
The Championship player of the year last season was sent on loan last summer to Crystal Palace to gain Premier League experience and continue his development; but things haven’t gone as planned, with the striker not able to get a regular shirt in Alan Pardew’s side.
Bamford has started just one game this season for Palace in the Capital One Cup win over Shrewsbury. Chelsea – Bamford’s parent club, are keen to see the player gain more playing time and are willing to recall the player back to Stamford Bridge if his situation doesn’t change between now and January.
Bamford has had a number of options outside London in recent times, but the Striker’s decision was swayed by Palace being in London and he appeared to have made the wrong call with Alan Pardew favouring Dwight Gayle upfront.
With the current form of the Palace side, it is understandable why Pardew is reluctant to make changes to a trusted starting xi.
Crystal Palace assistant Manager, Keith Millen, recently commented on Bamford’s situation saying: “We have spoken to Chelsea, they keep in contact with us and really do analyse what is going on with their players. Early on [Bamford] found it quite a step up as far as the tempo and demands of the Premier League plus the way we play and train. He had to adapt. But he also had a little niggly problem with his knee which has not stopped him playing but has not been ideal.”
“Without doubt he has got the talent – he is a finisher who pops up in good positions. He can score a goal. It’s just whether Alan [Pardew] feels he can put him on as a number nine or as a 10 in the pocket, sometimes we want that pace to run in behind, which isn’t really Patrick’s game.”
“He’s been a little bit unlucky and not done a lot wrong. It’s just about the balance of players on the pitch because he can play number nine or 10. But it’s been a good experience
for him but shows the step up from the Championship. It’s another level.”
“Chelsea will monitor it because they will want to see him having more game time.”
Bamford who Joined Chelsea from Nottingham Forest has been loaned to MK Dons, Derby County and Middleborough prior to Joining Crystal Palace.
The Striker scored 17 league goals and was crowned Championship player of last season.
