Besiktas boss confirms interest in Nigeria Midfielder John Obi Mikel. The Turkish side were keen on signing the 28 year old midfielder last summer but missed out on the player after Jose Mourinho blocked the Midfielder’s exit.
The 28 year old has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of Nemanja Matic and is behind the Serbian, Cesc Fabregas and Ramires in the clubs pecking order. Mikel made 6 starts last season and has made just 1 premier league start this season.
Speaking to Fanatik, Besiktas Supremo Fikret Orman confirmed the Turkish side were close to signing the midfielder last summer until the Turkish side’s manager indicated that he had second thought about the midfielder, he also stated that the club may rekindle their interest in the January transfer window.
“If [manager] Senol Gunes had given the go ahead we were going to sign [Mikel] and we could enter the race again over the winter break,” he said.
After a poor start to the season, Chelsea will most likely search for a centre midfielder in the January transfer window or in the summer which could make the Nigerian midfielder available for transfer.
Mikel featured in the super eagles 3-0 win on Sunday, he has made 342 appearances for Chelsea since arriving in 2006. Since the start of the 2009-2010 Season the Nigeria born midfielder has started in 38% of his club’s game.Follow Football News Arena on Facebook and Twitter for the latest transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from across the major Leagues in Europe and around the World.
