England U21 boss Gareth Southgate has insisted that Chelsea starlet Ruben Loftus-Cheek can force his way into the Blues’ starting eleven after the youngster’s wonderful performance for the young Lions in their Euro 2017 qualifying match.
The midfielder excelled as England dismantled Kazakhstan 3-0 in Coventry. The Chelsea midfielder who has had just 17 minutes of Premier League action under his belt this season opened the scoring for Gareth Southgate’s side and was given a standing ovation when he was substituted late on.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stated after the Southampton game that the 19 year old is in line to make his first Premier League start this season against Aston Villa and after his performance for the England U21 side, Jose won’t have any option but to stick the youngster out there against Aston Villa from the start.
Loftus Cheek who wasn’t allowed by Chelsea to go out on loan, despite the London club sending over 30 players out on loan, can challenge Oscar and Cesc Fabregas for a starting spot at the club with more impressive displays.
Southgate said: “Ruben has been with Chelsea since the back end of last season and he is enjoying that experience. He knows he’s got to keep training well every day and if he keeps doing that and performing as he did tonight I’m sure he’ll get an opportunity.
“He is a very calm and level-headed boy. I don’t see any chance of him getting carried away and I have a feeling his club manager won’t let him do that and we’ll be the same. That will be a consistent message. Goals are something he has to add to his game if he is going to be in the number 10 role.
“He’s a very powerful player. His use of the ball and ability to ride challenges and manipulate the ball quickly is very special. He should be very pleased with what he’s done and hopefully he can progress that over the next few weeks with his club.”
Loftus Cheek is considered as one of the best prospect emerging from England and the Blues hierarchy are very keen to see the youngster make the grade in the club’s first team.
