Barcelona have reportedly joined Chelsea in the race to sign John Stones from Everton in the January transfer window.
Spanish newspaper AS claims that Luis Enrique’s side are short of options at centre back and some members of the Blaugrana’s hierarchy believes the team needs to strengthen their centre back options.
Luis Enrique’s side are considering tabling a bid for John stones when the winter transfer opens and go head to head with Chelsea for the defender’s signature.
Stones, who saw 4 bids from Chelsea rejected by his club Everton last summer, is one of the four young centre backs on the Catalan giants wish list.
Atletico Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporta, PSG youngster Marquinhos and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez, all of which are between ages 20-21 are also on the Spanish club wish list.
According to Spanish Outlet El Pais, Barcelona considered signing Stones in the summer of 2013 before they eventually hired the services of former Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal for a combined fee of £30m, but the Spanish side could return for the former Barnsley man as they look to freshen up their ageing backline with Jeremy Mathieu, Javier Mascherano and Thomas Vermaelen approaching their thirties.
Earlier this season, Everton manager suggested that Stones could leave next summer if he has enough time to replace him, with Barcelona and Chelsea circling over the young English international it will be a lot more difficult for Everton to hold on to their prized asset.
Reports claims Chelsea see John Stones as a long term replacement for former England international John Terry and are ready to do everything within the club’s power to sign the centre defender in January.
Barcelona’s interest in Stones will come as a big blow to the west Londoners who will as well turn their attentions to two of Barcelona’s other options in Marquinhos and Aymeric Larpote if they can’t sign Stones.
Stones is a regular in the Everton line-up after his meteoric rise in the second half of the 2013-2014 season and has been in superb form for his club this season.
