Manchester united finally got back to winning ways on match day 4 of the UEFA Champions league at Old Trafford; the win was a much needed boost after playing three games without a win or even getting on the score sheet. Here is how the players rated.
David De Gea (7.0)
De Gea had almost nothing to do all through the match but when it mattered most, he showed why united want him to remain at old Trafford for a long time to come. Seydou Doumbia was through on goal with De Gea the only man standing between him and goal, the striker was cleverly denied by the goal keeper before a combination of Ashley Young and Chris Smalling thwarted the rebound. That save was crucial as united broke from their next move to score.
Daley Blind (6.5)
Good link up play from defence to midfield hardly put a foot wrong on the night.
Chris Smalling (7.0)
Good aerial presence, covered every available loop hole in the defence and recovered brilliantly to block Doumbia’s goal bound shot.
Ashley Young (6.5)
Mr versatile! Ashley young is proving to be an asset for the united side. He has been deployed in almost all available position and he hasn’t disappointed. Though he has been heavily criticised by his dive on the night.
Marcos Rojo (6.5)
Gave nothing away as he held his position very well. Luke Shaw will certainly have a battle in his hands when he returns from his injury.
Michael Carrick (6.5)
Carrick wind back the clock to when he was much younger with a commanding display, united would need more of such display.
Bastian Schweinsteiger (6.5)
Partnered well with Carrick and held possession as he closed down the CSKA Moscow attackers.
Juan Mata (6.5)
The Spaniard had a good game, was always available to distribute the passes. He made way in the second half with a thunderous cheer from the crowd.
Jesse Lingard (7.0) MoTM
He was the outstanding player on the night for Man Utd; he put the CSKA Moscow defence in constant pressure. He assisted Rooney for United’s goal and Akinfeev kept out a good shot by the youngster.
Anthony Martial (6.5)
Opposition are now aware of the threat posed by the Frenchman and was closed marked. Still put in a decent performance. Was a bit surprised when he was substituted though.
Wayne Rooney (6.5)
Did better and got into the box more often, dropped to the midfield and spread play well. Rooney scored the goal that gave his team all 3 points.
Marouane Fellaini (6.0)
He is doing well as a substitute, bullied the CSKA Moscow players when they were in possession.
Memphis Depay (5.0) FoTM
Didn’t influence the game meaningfully, put in a couple of woeful pull-out and lost possession. He needs to wake up.
Ander Herrera (N/A)
Was brought in just to run-down the clock, had little time to make any meaningful contribution.
