Manchester United need to grab all three points to edge closer to qualifying for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions league after missing out entirely from the competition last season.
The next opponent standing between them and all 3 points is Russian side CSKA Moscow. Both teams played out a 1-1 draw in a game United controlled but failed to find a cutting edge, something that has now become synonymous with the Red Devils in recent games.
Here are four things United should do to get all 3 points on the night:
NULLIFY THE DOUMBIA SYNDROME
Seydou Doumbia has formed a habit of scoring against MANCHESTER. The Ivorian striker scored on both occasion again Manchester City last season and has already scored against Manchester United when both sides met 2 weeks ago.
He is their main threat and opportunity for a goal. Smalling and Jones have to keep him quiet all through the game by staying close to him at all time. He is very good aerially and is fast in reacting to lose balls especially in the box as United could attest to when De Gea parried a penalty in the first leg, Doumbia reacted fastest to tap in the rebound.
ATTACK WITH INTENT
United should not just pass the ball around as it has often been the case this season, the y should take the game to CSKA Moscow with the intention of scoring. They should approach the game like its their last chance of qualifying thereby keeping CSKA Moscow wide danger men pre-occupied all through the game.
THE 12TH MAN FACTOR
The supports at Old Trafford have not been vocal enough this season. The team is down and short in confidence; a lift from the crowd can help the players handle the pressure knowing they’ve got the support of the home crowd.
VAN GAAL AT THE TOUCHLINE
The Dutch man is too quiet during games, he should be at the touchline dishing out instructions and correcting the players as the game progresses. This is what top coaches do i.e. Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Diego Simeone etc.
